This hike has two possible starting points. One is on Saint Julien Road, and the other slightly higher on Tunnel Mountain Drive (where parking is more limited). The trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking the town of Banff and the valley toward Lake Louise. Along the way you will also get views in the opposite direction toward the Bow River and Mount Rundle.

• Difficulty: challenging because of the elevation gain – the trail climbs steadily uphill on a forest path. Not suitable for strollers.

This short walk along the shore of Lake Minnewanka leads to a bridge over the Cascade River, where you can enjoy a nice view into the canyon carved by the river. On hot summer days the bridge is also a great place to cool down thanks to the cold air flowing from the canyon.

If you decide to continue further along the trail, you should travel in a group of at least four people because of wildlife activity in the area.

• Distance: 3.4 km (parking lot to the bridge and back)

This trail follows the canyon along the river using wooden walkways and small bridges built into the rock walls. Most visitors hike to the viewpoints of the two waterfalls, but more experienced hikers can continue further to Ink Pots.

The trail is accessible year-round, but during winter months I recommend bringing ice spikes because the trail can become very icy.

• Distance: 5.2 km to Upper Falls (11.2 km to Ink Pots)
• Elevation gain: 136 m (306 m to Ink Pots)
• Access: car or bus
• Difficulty: relatively easy. The trail gradually climbs uphill and is well maintained, with railings in some sections.

Sulphur Mountain

This trail is usually considered moderately difficult if you hike all the way from the parking lot. However, here we are only talking about the upper section, which you can reach by gondola.

During the summer season it’s best to buy gondola tickets online in advance. At the top you will find a wooden boardwalk that leads to the summit viewpoint. From there you get incredible views of the surrounding valleys and the town of Banff below.

• Distance: 1.2 km
• Elevation gain: 35 m
• Access: gondola – the gondola base can be reached by car or bus
• Difficulty: easy walk along a wooden boardwalk with a few stairs.

Sunshine Meadows

In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful hikes near Banff. The only downside is that if you don’t want to hike a long and steep hill to get there, you will need to take the gondola. However, it is definitely money well spent. The views from the top are absolutely incredible.

There are several hiking options in this area, but here I will mention only a shorter and a longer loop that belong among the easiest trails. Both routes eventually lead back to the lower gondola station.

• Distance: 7.5 km longer loop (3.1 km shorter loop)
• Elevation gain: 110 m longer loop (17 m shorter loop)
• Access: gondola or hiking
• Difficulty: easy – mostly downhill. The shorter option is almost entirely downhill.

Lake Louise is a small village in the Canadian Rockies and one of the most visited places in the region. During the summer season you should expect full parking lots and large crowds. The reason is simple — this area is home to two of the most famous lakes in the Canadian Rockies: Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.

Boom Lake

Boom Lake is a beautiful turquoise glacial lake surrounded by mountains on all sides. The trail to the lake leads almost entirely through the forest. The hike is accessible in all seasons, but during winter or after heavy snowfall I recommend using snowshoes.

• Elevation gain: 220 m
• Access: car
• Difficulty: moderate because of the distance. The trail is mostly flat or gently uphill and follows a forest path all the way to the lake viewpoint.

Moraine Lake Rockpile

This is one of the most famous viewpoints in Banff National Park. You can no longer drive directly to Moraine Lake by car. The area is accessible only by shuttle bus, bicycle, on foot, or by cross-country skis in winter (Check out the Avalanche forecast. Bow Glacier Falls

This trail follows the shore of Bow Lake and leads to a waterfall flowing from the Bow Glacier. The hike is not particularly difficult. You can park either in the parking lot along the highway or in a smaller parking area directly next to the lake.

• Access: car
• Difficulty: moderate – beautiful trail along the lake with a rocky section near the waterfall.

Airport transport is usually the easiest option. You simply book an airport bus for a specific time.

You can hop on right at the airport (or sometimes downtown) and it will take you to Canmore, Banff, or Lake Louise.

These buses aren’t the cheapest way to travel, but they’re comfortable and they drop you exactly where you need to be. I actually used one of these myself years ago.

Most operators include one bag in the ticket price, with additional luggage for an extra fee.

I believe you can reach almost all of the popular tourist spots in Banff National Park and Yoho National Park without driving.

Jasper National Park is also doable without a car — tourist transportation is organized fairly well there.

If you want to keep going farther west, I’d recommend renting a car.

I recommend using Roam Transit buses between the towns—specifically Route 3. The fare is 6 CAD for a one-way trip. Alternatively, there are other companies like Flixbus, but they are much more expensive.

Driving by car takes about 20 minutes. In Banff, finding a parking spot in the town center can be difficult, and parking is paid from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Free parking is available at the “Train Station Parking Lot” (Transit-Hub) in Banff. Spots cannot be reserved in advance.

Calgary Airport to Banff by Car

At the airport, you will find several car rental companies. All rental offices are located in the same place, in a building called the Rental Car Center. The building is located opposite the airport terminal and can be reached on foot within a few minutes.

Car Rental Companies

The listed car rental companies offer vehicle pickup directly at the airport with the option to return the car in Banff. I recommend booking your car in advance, especially during the summer season. If you plan to return the car in Banff, make sure to enter the correct return branch address during the booking process.

I personally recommend booking directly on the rental company’s website. From experience, I know that some comparison websites offer insurance that may not be accepted by the rental company.

If you choose to rent a car without insurance, rental companies often block a damage deposit. This is a security deposit to ensure the car is returned in good condition. The amount depends on the type of vehicle and is usually a few thousand CAD.

I also recommend taking photos of the car from all sides and recording a short video when picking it up. This can help you avoid charges for damage that was already made.

If you are considering additional insurance, I recommend windshield coverage. There is a lot of loose gravel left on the highway after the winter season, and there is a high chance you will be driving on gravel roads in mountain area.

Car rental prices depending on the tourist season and the number of rental days. The cheapest cars usually start at around CAD 60 per day.

If you are traveling from the EU, I recommend to get an International Driving License and verifying with the rental company that it is accepted.

After picking up the car, simply head west on Highway 1, which will take you directly from Calgary to Banff.

If you decide to spend some time in Calgary before heading to the Canadian Rockies, you will most likely be looking for transportation from downtown.

Moraine Lake Shuttle

Moraine Lake by bus:

– The cheapest option is the Parks Canada Shuttle. It runs from Lake Louise Ski Resort (Park & Ride). You can first visit Lake Louise and then continue directly to Moraine Lake.

– Another option is transport by smaller private companies, usually using vans or minibuses. These are more comfortable and flexible, but much more expensive.

– The last option is transport for guests of Moraine Lake Lodge. With a hotel reservation, you are allowed to drive to the lake or use transport provided directly by the lodge.

How to Get to Moraine Lake for Free

There are only two free options:

– By bicycle: Bike directly on Moraine Lake Road. Most of the route is slightly uphill, but the ride back is fast and easy. The downside is increasing traffic on the narrow road – buses may follow behind you for several minutes before they can pass. Other options is Morain Lake Highline Trail but I can not recomend this one for climb up. Terrain is quite steep at some points and rough.

– On foot or running: The Moraine Lake Highline Trail almost follows the road. You can start near the Lake Louise lakeshore parking area. The distance to Moraine Lake is about 12.5 km one way.

For both options, always carry bear spray – wildlife encounters are common on these routes.

Moraine Lake Shuttle and Tours

Parks Canada Shuttle

Buses usually operate from early June to mid-November, depending on road conditions.

Parks Canada shuttles depart from Lake Louise Ski Resort, where a Park & Ride operates during summer. You can reach this place by Roam Transit buses from Banff.

You must do your Moraine Lake shuttle reservation in advance. In 2026 online reservations open in April 15th 8am. Parks Canada releases about 40% of tickets at that time and the remaining 60% during the season, two days in advance at 8:00 AM on the reservation website.

Lake Louise Ski Resort (Park & Ride) is the main transfer hub for both lakes.

From here, official Parks Canada shuttles run:

– Park & Ride → Moraine Lake 

– Park & Ride → Lake Louise (lakeshore)

Each direction requires a valid reservation.

If you book only the Moraine Lake shuttle, you can use:

Moraine Lake in Winter

Moraine Lake Road is closed in the winter. There are still ways to reach the area, but travel is not recommended due to avalanche terrain. If you decide to continue into these zones and reach the lake, you should carry full avalanche gear and a satellite phone – out of Lake louise area is no cell reception.

Cross-Country Skiing

The most popular winter activity is cross-country skiing on the groomed track. Due to avalanche risk, the track does not reach the lake itself but ends at viewpoints of the lake surrounding peaks. The trail is about 10 km long, mostly with a little climb – which makes the return trip fast and fun.

Snowshoeing

Another option is snowshoeing. Be prepared for a very long day – reaching Moraine Lake and returning can mean 25–30 km, depending on whether you follow the road or the summer trail.

Backcountry skiing

Some people also use ski touring equipment on this route to skin up. The downhill part is not very fun, especially on flat or slightly uphill sections.
